Radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs), which is a relatively new class of neural networks, have been investigated for their applicability for prediction of performance and emission characteristics of a diesel engine fuelled with waste cooking oil (WCO). The RBF networks were trained using the experimental data, where in load percentage, compression ratio, blend percentage, injection timing, and injection pressure were taken as the input parameters, and brake thermal efficiency (BTE), brake specific energy consumption (BSEC), exhaust gas temperature (T exh), and engine emissions were used as the output parameters. The number of RBF centers was selected randomly. The network was initially trained using variable width values for the RBF units using a heuristic and then was trained by using fixed width values. Studies showed that RBFNN predicted results matched well with the experimental results over a wide range of operating conditions. Prediction accuracy for all the output parameters was above 90% in case of performance parameters and above 70% in case of emission parameters.

Performance and Emission Prediction in a Biodiesel Engine Fuelled with Honge Methyl Ester Using RBF Neural Networks

In the present study, RBF neural networks were used for predicting the performance and emission parameters of a biodiesel engine. Engine experiments were carried out in a 4 stroke diesel engine using blends of diesel and Honge methyl ester as the fuel. Performance parameters like BTE, BSEC, Tex and emissions from the engine were measured. These experimental results were used for ANN modeling. R...

Comparative study of Performance and Emission Characteristics of a Diesel Engine Fueled by Castor and jatropha methyl Ester with the help of T Test

Biofuels are playing important role in recent decades as substitutes for petro diesel. Biodiesel derived from vegetable oils are found to give comparable performance and emission characteristics. In this paper a comparative study has been done between two fuels combinations i.e. jatropha and castor. The biodiesel was prepared from neat oils and blends of biodiesel (up till 20%) were prepared...

Effect of Compression Ratio on Emission of CI Engine using Neat Karanja Oil and Karanja Oil Methyl Ester Blends

The standard design parameters of a compression ignition engine fail to give specified performance with strait vegetable oil (SVO) from different origins. This study is performed to find the effect of compression ratio on emission characteristics such as carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbon (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and smoke opacity with all the tested fuels in a single cy...

A Comparative Study on the use of Butyl Esters of Soyabean and Sunflower Oils as Biodiesel Fuel for Compression Ignition Engine

To study the feasibility of using two edible plant oils as diesel substitute a comparative study was made. Oils were exacted from the seeds of soyabean (Glycine Max, Family: Leguminoceae) and sunflower(Helianthus annuus, Family: Asteraceae/Compositeae). Oils were esterified (butyl esters) before blending with pure diesel in the ratio of 10:90, 15:85, 20:80, and 25:75 by volume. Pure diesel was ...

Prediction and Comparison of the Effect of N-butanol and Ethanol Addition to the Biodiesel-diesel Fuel Mixture on the Performance and Emissions Characteristics of a Diesel Engine

The main objective of this research is to study the effects of n-butanol and ethanol addition to the biodiesel-diesel fuel mixture on the performance and emission characteristics of a CI engine. The experimental tests were performed on a diesel engine. The RSM (Response Surface Methodology) method was used to develop mathematical models based on experimental data. According to the results, the ...
